This year’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy Spring Concert on Tuesday 22 March was indeed a wonderful way to free one’s mind from cares during two hours of marvellous musical entertainment.
There was something for everyone – and lots for all – as parents, students and staff in the auditorium, and several hundred watching via the livestream, were brought a repertoire ranging from classical composers Vivaldi and Mozart to music from film and theatre. Members of the Symphony Orchestra showed just how inspired they were by their trip to see The Prince of Egypt in London’s West End at the start of term as they played its music brilliantly. The choir brought things up to date with a very rhythmical performance of We Don’t Talk About Bruno, from Disney’s recent release, Encanto.
It was wonderful to see students conducting as well. Isabel, Year 11, led Amaris in a lovely rendition of Leavitt’s Gloria, and fellow Year 11 Sophia conducted the Scholars’ Ensemble in a medley of pieces from the music of Studio Ghibli, which she had also arranged.
Among many other highlights were reprises of several performances from January’s Young Musicians Final and some excellent numbers from Jazz Evening in the Live Lounge earlier this month were deservedly given a wider audience.
Last, but by no means least, Year 7 singers, dancers and musicians had the audience clapping along as they appropriately concluded proceedings with Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy.
