Variety was a recurring theme during the Women in Finance panel event on Tuesday 7 November. Our alumnae panellists talked about the range of career opportunities that exist in the sector and the varied nature of their day to day work. Head of Sixth Form Mr Abbott, who hosted the evening, also highlighted the array of degree subjects speakers studied, including ancient history, biochemistry and economics. There was general consensus that a degree in any subject can open doors into the world of finance, and the recommendation to students was to study something they really enjoy.

Speakers offered helpful simple explanations of their particular fields of expertise, recognising that even commonly heard terms, such as investment banking, aren’t well understood by the layperson. Rather than simply focusing on mathematical skills, students heard how many financial organisations have a huge focus on people and seeing their employees in the round, about the need for creativity in investment banking and how many companies place a huge emphasis on ethical values. The panellists shared tips about graduate opportunities and how to find internships. All heartily advised students to take up internships, if possible, and make the most of such opportunities, including by talking to colleagues and finding out what everyone does.
